Canadian here. I think what's happening is that publicity about the border clamp downs has frightened off people wanting to go it.

The administration has made big huge, very public, fusses about it.  There's even stories of Western people coming in who have had problems.  I strongly suspect that word has reached countries such that someone considering an illegal entry is afraid.

I think you might be on to something. Everyone else around the world gets to see the full picture while our media has been indirectly censored for at least the past five years. Despite the fact that Mexicans and other hispanics tend to be conservative he is overwhelmingly hated in Mexico and much of hispanic America. Interesting timeline on the graph.  I don’t know that Obama really did anything all that significant and his entire presidency is a long period of extremely low numbers.

The major push seems to have started during Trump’s first term, around 2019, the graph just rockets up.  Then a major dip, which would have coincided with the spread of coronavirus but then quickly resuming its upward trajectory.

What was going on during Trump’s first term around 2018 that spurred that massive change?

Venezuelan domestic issues?  Guatemalan domestic issues?  Something really caused a major change there around 2019.

Just to be clear, this data is the number of times a border officer encountered an illegal crossing and reported it. So if an illegal immigrant successfully crosses they would not count towards this number.

If you look at the data posted by OP, Bidens administration deported more immigrants than ever before in history, thanks to Trump's title 42 policy which allowed expedited deportations. It stands to reason that with more deportations there would also be more border encounters as people try to cross again after getting kicked out. The sharp drop in border crossings started when title 42 expired, which is why I believe that is the single greatest contributor to these numbers.

If Trump can figure out a new expedited deportation policy, these numbers could continue, but if not, I fear they could rise again to pre COVID levels that we had during Trump's first term. Neither historically high or low. The Democrats completely fucked up the border by their own confused and misaligned policies, hopefully a cohesive attitude will get the train back on the track. Now is not the time for celebration but action.

Dems wanted to take a more filtered approach: deport criminals, help those with legitimate asylum cases, prevent family separation, all the works. Why don’t we consider a policy like Australia’s? In 2013, Australia saw about **20,000 people arriving by boat** seeking asylum, which created significant challenges.

In response, they introduced Operation Sovereign Borders in July 2013, which included measures like:

* Turning back boats when safe to do so
* Processing asylum seekers offshore
